Back in Beirut

Well that is almost it folks. I am now safely back in Beirut, leisurely passing the time away just wandering around the city with the odd break here and there, after all it is warm here. What can I say about this holiday. The travel gods have smiled on me once again sometimes giving me what I wanted, sometimes what I needed and sometimes both. When it all clicks into place with the weather, the people, the time nd the location you have some very very special moments. How this all happens I am not sure I just refer you to my about page and the way I approach these trips in a very very positive...

Bekaa Beauty

Bekaa Beauty

Yes the holiday just seems to carry on at a superlative ridden rate. The Bekaa is brilliant, a high arid but fertile plateau between 2 mountain ranges and historically very important. Lots of old and very old buildings to investigate then. The Hermel pyramid right to the north of the valley, high on a hill in the middle of nowhere. A monument to what……………? It is a fine vision as you travel south and enter the mighty impressive valley. Then to Balbeck to the ancient ruins at sunset to get the best light for photos. Well worth the wait it was too. There are plenty of guide...

Qadisha Valley

Qadisha Valley

Hi all (that’s enough food…………Ed) The last few days in and around the Qadisha valley, where do I start. By far the best location of the holiday so far. High up in the Lebanese mountains, just below the ski resorts that have no snow, I think we had it all as they have had a wild winter by comparison to normal. The valley itself is a steep sided rocky gorge with small mountain villages dotted around the top and clinging precariously to the edge in some cases. I was stopping in Hasroun, in a wonderfully charismatic 110 year old house and server vast quantities of home cooked food all...

Tripoli – Special day alert

Yes folks I have just had one of those magic days. It started last night at about 23:00 when I was asked by the brother of the B&B owner whether I would like towatch some card playing by 4 local brothers. I said yes of course. What I did not realise was that the eldest brother is 90 years old and a pretty good card player mentally and physically dextrous indeed. A small smoke-filled room with one poor light in it, lots of animated Arabic staccato conversations and arguments after each game as it is played in pairs and you are supposed to help your partner out………………….or not...

Enfeh it is

Enfeh it is

Well here I am at sleepy little Enfeh 70 KM further north up the coast from Beirut. Sploshhhhhhhh… did you hear that sound? I can actually through a stone from my apartment terrace and it would land in the sea, that is how close I am. Overlooking some Crusader castle foundation ruins once occupied by the Lords of Nephim (great name whoever they were) . I must interrupt the email for one moment. I am in the equivalent of the local modern cinema multiplex/bowling/fast food establishment at the moment in the middle of a 9-year-old childs birthday party with the normal chaos and excitement...
